Shop for Clothes to Suit your Figure

By Tessa W. Adachi

Every woman has some trouble finding the perfect fit when shopping for clothes. If you happen to have a plus size figure, it can be even more challenging to find well fitting clothes which flatter your figure. Many clothing designers just add inches to their existing styles to make their plus size line without taking into account the way that these clothes will fit on actual women.

In recent years, however, designers have begun to design clothing for a worldwide market that fits better because it takes into account four basic body types -- the apple, the pear (a.k.a. the "bell" or "triangle"), the hourglass and the column (a.k.a. the "rectangle" or "athletic/boyish" shape). This system works equally well for women ranged from sizes 10 to 30.

Determining what body type you have is a relatively simple matter. If you have an upper body that is wide and narrow hips then you're most probably the apple shape. If you notice that you have a smaller upper body and wider hips, then you're pear-shaped. For those who have a smaller waist, with a curvy upper and lower body (the width of your hips is more or less equivalent to the width of your shoulders), you are an hourglass shape. Lastly, if you have fewer defined curves and the measurements for your waist, hips, and breast are very similar to one another, then you have a column figure.

Not every type of clothing suits every body type equally. Here are some general tips to keep in mind when you're shopping for clothes that will help you look your best.

If you are apple shaped, then the way to go is to de-emphasize the waistline and the shoulders. In order to draw the eye upwards, go for v-neck tops. In order to make the waist appear smaller, you can use nipped or belted waist jackets.

A pear shape calls for balancing out the lower and upper body. What you should look for is clothes which will make your shoulders appear wider while deemphasizing your hips and thighs. Look for clothes with wide necklines - cowl necks, bateau and square neck tops work well here. You can also use fabrics with eye catching textures and patterns to draw attention to the upper body. You can make your upper and lower body appear more balanced by wearing dark coloured pants or skirts with brightly coloured (or at least lightly coloured) tops.

Those who have the column body shape should work to create the illusion of more curves by wearing scoop or V-neck tops, and look for jackets that have a more defined waist or that flare out from the waist. Look for dresses that break up a columnar silhouette with prints, patterns, and dimensional details like tailored designs.

Lastly, if you have an hourglass figure, you can go for a look that either shows off your curves, or you can choose clothing that deemphasizes your bust and hips to create a longer, leaner silhouette. To show off your curves, look for items that cinch or wear a belt around the waist. This will show off your hips. To elongate and balance your shape, look for clothes with a V-neck, which will draw the eye vertically upward. Pants or jeans that have a slight bit of flair also help to add balance.

Every woman can look amazing with the right clothes. The important thing is to know what you're looking for so that you can make the right choices when shopping for clothes. Once you know what to look for, you can put together a wardrobe which will make you look and feel terrific. - 17943
