My Face Surgery Story

By Kitty R. Kat

Spring of 2000 I went on a cruise with my daughter. When I developed the pictures, I noticed my upper eye lids were very droopy. So I set up a consultation with a plastic surgeon and made arrangements to have surgery.

The plastic surgeon made various recommendations during our appointment. He wanted me to have a brow lift for the deep lines across my forehead, shave off a bump on my nose and correct my puffy lower lids along with my droopy upper lids. Whew! We took the before pictures and I made the down payment.

The day of my surgery I had to fill out the usual paperwork with the hospital. They suggested that I stay over night because I was having more than one procedure done. Thank God I agreed. After my four hour surgery I hardly remember anything except a visit from my family. They didn't expect me to look like I did and my sister-in-law said I scarred my 3 month old nephew for life.

I must of looked pretty bad. My eyes were swollen shut and my nose and forehead were bandaged. The nurse had to help me around 4am to go to the bathroom, because they put an ointment on my eyelids and it blurred my vision. There was no way I could of taken care of myself if I had gone home.

The next day I did go home and went straight to bed. My daughter had to feed me for two days and bring me ice every hour. With the antibiotic ointment they gave me along with ice my bruising was minimal. By the 5th day I was much better and I wanted to shower reallllly bad. But I couldn't until my stitches came out and that was on the 10th day. Good thing I learned how to take a sponge bath with my breast reduction. (see my breast reduction post).

The 10th day finally came to get my stitches removed. The surgeon never told me they would have to be removed. The worst part of my breast surgery was taking the stitches out of my chest. They had to hold me down, it was very painful. This wasn't as bad, but still hurt. You can still see the scars at the corner of my eyes.

Not only did they not tell me about the stitches, the big thing I found out is that I have a scar from ear to ear where they separated the skin from my scalp. It has been 8 years since the surgery and I still have numbness on the top and sides of my head. Yes, I am a numbskull. When they stitched up the skin during the brow lift they used permanent sutures and knotted the ends. From time to time these knots get sore and I have hair loss around the scar.

On my follow-up appointment with my surgeon, he wanted to know if I was glad I had the surgeries. The pain was still to fresh for me to say yes, but he assured me I would be happy for years. 8 years later I have droopy eyelids again, but the other procedures are still good..no wrinkles. Recently I had Restylane around my mouth, but thats entirely another story. - 17943
