Sew Your Style

By Donna Trumble

Do you get excited when you see the newest fashions? Isnt it amazing how quickly fashion changes. The winds of change affect the styles and trends of clothing every season.

Even more incredible than seeing the newest styles, is making them. That is right. Those of us who sew have a unique opportunity to make our own exciting fashion statement. When we something we like, we can imitate it. When we get a flash of genius, all we have to do is enter our creative wonderland and sew together what we imagine. We can construct our own styles the way we want them. We can express ourselves in ways others can only wish.

Fashion and change appear to go hand in hand. Just about the time you get comfortable with the most current styles, they change. Trends come and go so fast it is really hard to keep up to date. Just as the new pops up, the current styles fade away.

So what fashions can we expect for the new year? Scan through the pages of your favorite fashion magazine and see what is there. What do you like or dislike? It seems to me there are many interesting revivals of past styles applied is slightly new ways. Fashion often revives styles from the past with just a slight twist. You can too.

When you see the styles you really like, start thinking in terms of how you can make them your own. When you see fashion elements that you think would accent your own features, plant to take advantage of them.

If you are fearful that your projects might not turn out just right, there are several practical solutions. There are hundreds of patterns produced by the pattern houses like Vogue, Simplicity, and McCalls. You can always use parts of old patterns to make new applications. There is also, design software available including Dressmaker and My Design. To gain more confidence, enroll in a class on fitting or even pattern design.

Exactly, what kind of projects could you do? What about jackets, slacks, skirts, dresses, suits, belts, purses, blouses, and loads of embellished items? Your imagination is your only limitation. Think about how you could take simple projects and enhance them with special collars, cuffs, embroidery, or appliqu.

If you take just a few minutes to let your imagination run wild, you will come up with a million possibilities: easy wraps, straight skirts, embellished blouses, and jackets. There is no limit. The sewing projects you create will be your own fashion statement.

If it takes more than a few hours, some of us never get done. So, frequently, I will buy a cheap ready to wear garment and then do my thing. Since most ready to wear does not fit my body, I usually have to make some adjustments anyway. So, I do. With a touch of decorative threads, metallic embellishment, sparkles, changing a collar, or even embroidery, I take ordinary and turn it into extraordinary. As sewers, we can choose to design and sew from scratch or to transform a stock item. Either way, we are able to produce our own distinctive fashions.

Recycling is a popular theme today. By recycling what we find in our closet, we can create some amazing new styles. Take a visit to your closet. Look with a designers eye. What if you changed this on that? What if you added this to that? Just think a few minor alterations, enhancements, or embellishments could transform an old drab closet item into your latest style. Become the envy of your fashion world. Create. Remake.

In my opinion, a touch of color can completely change a style. It may be adding a color or replacing it with white. Adding a while lacy cuff or neckline, changes everything. Accessorizing with color can make a big impact. By selecting the colors I like, I can create my own fashion styles.

Sewing has so many great benefits. Sewing relaxes us. Sewing gives us deep inner peace. Sewing expresses our creativity. Sewing builds our self confidence. Sewing satisfies our inner passions. Fashion Sewing empowers us to create our own styles with the colors, textures, fit, design, comfort, and personal statement like nothing else.

When you see that skirt at Dillards for $220, ask yourself, Could I make that? And then give yourself the answer you know is true. Yes, you can. Not only can you sew it, you can do it a much less cost. You can probably even improve on it. Then imagine the thrill when you over year your friends say, She must have spent a fortune.

Today, the modern sewing machines and other tools available make sewing so easy and convenient it is a real blessing. Using a quality sewing machine is fun, easy, and gives real satisfaction. Making your own styles has never been easier. So, lets sew. Lets create our own personal fashion statement. - 17943
